If you ask me what are the coolest festivals I have ever been to, “Holi in Korea” would definitely be among the top ones. As an expat in Korea, do you know what’s the best thing about living here? One gets to enjoy festivals throughout the year. No matter what city you are living in and what time of the year you are visiting the country, you will always have the opportunity to make amazing memories. And if you are here during Spring, you’d be lucky to get a chance to enjoy the festival of colors like no other country. Yes, I am talking about “Holi Hai” – the biggest Holi Festival in South Korea.

What is Holi Festival?

Holi Festival is also known as ‘the festival of colors’, ‘the festival of love’ and the ‘Happiest festival of the year’ and you will definitely agree with the names given to this jubilant occasion. Holi Festival is basically originated from India and Nepal, where the festival was celebrated to welcome Spring. People used to do bonfires and throw rainbow-hued powder at each other. Due to a huge Indian diaspora, the festival started to get famous all over the world. Now it has become so popular across the world that you’ll get to celebrate the festival in almost every country.

Holi in Korea – A brief introduction

eople celebrate Holi in Korea with great pomp and show in Korea just like in any other country. The “HoliHai” organization choose a different city every year as the location for this festival and to promote local tourism among the expats in Korea. Geoje was chosen as the host city for last year’s Holi in Korea festival. This year, Miryang gets the honor to organize it.

How does the Holi in Korea look like?

Trust me peeps, you can not miss this kind of event. It doesn’t matter whether you know Indian songs or whether you find Indian curry too spicy, you definitely will have a memorable time. There will be foreigners, Koreans and ofcourse lots of Indians who would be waiting for you to throw colors at them, as a token of friendship 🙂 (but don’t forget the Newton’s third law)

According to the official website of Holi Hai, “The color powder used in Holi in Korea festival are completely organic, lungs safe and biodegradable. They are from of natural ingredient corn starch and food grade edible colorants (Zea mays), non-toxic certified, skin & hair friendly, stain free, moisture free, biodegradable, easy to wash off, free from heavy metals”
